Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day
probably came to be as the result of a combination of three
observances. The first, and most widely believed
story, tells of a young Roman priest named Valentine who
disobeyed the Emperor Claudius II in 200 A.D. and was
imprisoned. On the eve of his execution, he wrote a letter to Asterius's daughter, whom he had
fallen in love with. He signed the letter with the phrase, "From Your Valentine."
The second, an ancient Roman festival called
Lupercalia was celebrated on February 15th. It was a
celebration to ensure protection from wolves as well as a
promise of fertility for animals and humans.
The third, an old English belief,
states that February 14th is the day that birds pair off with
their mates. The custom of exchanging valentines on
February 14th can be traced to the English poet, Geoffrey
Chaucer who wrote that birds choose their mates on February
14th.
Today, this
holiday is observed
by expressing loving feelings to sweethearts, husbands, wives, family
and friends. Some people enjoy creating their own verses
while others prefer to have poets create messages for
them. To create a lasting gift that your sweetheart can enjoy over and over again and feel loved each time he or she
